DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is an email authentication system used to prove that an email has been sent by an authorized individual or email server. An electronic signature is attached to the message’s header using a private key. When the email is received, a public key that is available in the global Domain Name System is used to check who actually sent it and whether the content has been altered in any way. The main job of DomainKeys Identified Mail is to avert the widely spread scam and spam messages, as it makes it impossible to forge an email address. If a message is sent from an email address claiming to belong to your bank or financial institution, for example, but the signature does not match, you will either not receive the message at all, or you will receive it with an alert that most probably it’s not an authentic one. It depends on email providers what exactly will happen with an email message that fails the signature check. DomainKeys Identified Mail will also give you an extra layer of protection when you communicate with your business partners, for instance, since they can see that all the e-mails that you exchange are legitimate and haven’t been modified on their way.

DomainKeys Identified Mail in Hosting

If you host a domain name in a hosting account from our company, all the obligatory records for using the DomainKeys Identified Mail functionality will be set up by default. This will happen as soon as you add the domain name in the Control Panel’s Hosted Domains section, as long as the domain also uses our NS resource records. A private cryptographic key will be generated on our email servers, while a public key will be added to the global DNS database automatically using the TXT resource record. Thus, you won’t have to do anything manually and you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of this email validation system – your email messages will be sent to any audience without being discarded and no one will be able to send email messages forging your addresses. The latter is truly important in case the nature of your online presence involves sending regular offers or newsletters via email to potential and current clients.

DomainKeys Identified Mail in Semi-dedicated Servers

Our Linux semi-dedicated servers come with DomainKeys Identified Mail activated by default, so in case you select a semi-dedicated server plan and you add a domain name using our name servers through your Hepsia Control Panel, the records required for the validation system will be set up automatically – a private key on our email servers for the digital signature and a TXT resource record carrying the public key for the DNS database. As the DKIM protection is set up for a particular domain, all email addresses created under it will have a signature, so you will not have to worry that the emails that you send may not be delivered to their target email address or that someone may spoof any of your email addresses and attempt to spam/scam people. This may be rather essential when you rely on email communication in your business, since your colleagues and/or clients will be able to distinguish authentic emails from fake ones.
